In this test I used the “Object Info / Random” node to create a variety of cars, using only one car, one material, one texture and the magic o Cycles.
Let me try to explain how I did this.
The different shaders of the different parts of the car are determined by the texture alpha chanel, then cycles uses those values to choose the right shader for each part.
The car paint style is randomly choose between 6 uvmaps. The colors uses a similar method, also using the Object Info Node Cycles choose between 10 colors.
Then using the duplifaces I can create as many cars I want. Unfortunately the variation that creates is limited, because I can only get one random value per object. The ideal was that each Object Info node generates a different random value based on the object, but I don’t know if this is even possible to do /my knowledge of C is very limited and I don’t want to bother cycles developers with this, they already have a lot of work to do).

Clearly with duplifaces cycles uses a lot less memory and take a lot less time to prepare the scene before rendering.

The objective of this test is to see the object duplication capabilities of cycles, both in terms of memory use and render time. There’s some thing I still have to do before starting with the final test, like female characters, trees, houses, cars, etc.
This characters are very basic, and they also have a basic rig, but functional and you can use them for anything you can.
